Freestyle specialist Dani Cabrera qualifies for WIAA state meet on Nov. 14-15 at Madison

OHS girls swim team finishes 8th at WIAA Sectional Cooney swimmer Dani Cabrera, competing in one of the state’s most competitive WIAA Sectionals, qualified for the state meet, Nov. 14-15 in Madison with a seventh-place finish Saturday at Waukesha South. As a team, OHS finished eighth in the 13-team competition. Two of the teams were combined squads: Waukesha South/Mukwonago and Kettle Moraine/Waukesha North. Cabrera, a senior and the Wisconsin Little Ten conference champion in the 100-yard freestyle, recorded a personal best 53.72 to place seventh at South. Her time, however, was one of the best 24 recorded during the Sectionals. The top finisher in each Sectional is an automatic qualifier with the next best at-large times also qualifying. Her time on Nov. 1, when she won the WLT title in the event was 54.26, so at the Sectional Cabrera bettered her time by.5 seconds. A free-style specialist, Cabrera was also sixth in the 50-yard free at South with a 24.87 clocking. At the WLT meet, held at the YMCA at Pabst Farms, Cabrera finished third in the 50. The OHS star also swam a leg on the school’s 400-yard freestyle relay team, which finished seventh with a 3:47.30 time. Joining her Saturday were junior Samantha Johnston and two freshmen, Alexis Craft and Amanda Jordan. At the WLT meet, OHS swimmers won the 400 free relay with a 3:46 clocking. That team was composed of Cabrera, Sarah Konruff, Johnston, and Jordan. Oconomowoc’s 200-yard medley team, composed of Cabrera, Johnston, Jordan, and Craft, was eighth at South (1:57.79).
