Dominic Briggs, a sophomore, scores four first-half goals as OHS moves out to 2-0-1 on the season
Cooney sophomore Dominic Briggs scored four first-half goals Tuesday night as the OHS boys varsity soccer team shocked an old nemesis, Slinger, 4-0, in the Wisconsin Little Ten conference opener for both teams at OHS.
The Cooney win left the team 2-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in the WLT. The Slinger loss leaves it 0-3 on the season, 0-1 in the WLT.
OHS has now beaten the Owls for the last three years in a row, winning last season 2-0 at Slinger and in 2013, 2-1.
The young Owls, who had only a single senior in the starting lineup Tuesday night, still have not scored a goal this season, having lost to Appleton North, 0-1, in the opener on Aug. 27, and 0-5 to Green Bay Preble on Aug. 29.
To gain the win Tuesday night, OHS needed to rebound from its 0-0 tie last Thursday with Mukwonago, and it did so quickly as Briggs scored in the third minute with an assist from junior Paolo Olivier. Briggs then scored again in the eighth minute, this time with an assist from Robby Zimmerman, another junior.
Goal No. 3 came 10 minutes later, in the 18th minute, as Briggs scored unassisted. His final goal, in the 36th minute, was also unassisted as Slinger had no answer for the Cooney forward.
OHS has now scored eight goals in its three matches this season while surrendering just two.
Up next for OHS is a non-conference match Thursday at Sun Prairie. Cooney returns to conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 8, when it hosts West Bend West.
