OHS boys varsity soccer team overcomes slow start, defeats Verona, 4-2, in season opener at OHS

Steger, Johnston, Schlender, and Olivier score for OHS as OHS rallies from 1-0 deficit

Down 1-0 at the half, the OHS boys varsity soccer team exploded for four goals in the second half Tuesday night at OHS to defeat Verona, 4-2, in the nonconference season opener for both teams.

The first half was evenly played until late when Verona, a member of the Big Eight conference, scored the match’s first goal in the 44th minute. OHS countered early in the second half when Oconomowoc sophomore Jackson Steger scored with an assist from Junior Matt Docter to tie the match at 1-1.

Mr. Hustle, Nick Johnston, a senior, then gave OHS the lead  at 2-1 with his first goal of the season.  Junior Robby Zimmerman earned the assist. Oconomowoc then scored two more goals to pull away from a strong and pesty Verona squad. Senior Kory Schlender scored the third goal for OHS  but sophomore Demo Briggs made it possible with his shot that the Verona goalie deflected, setting up Schlender’s score.

Junior Paolo Olivier, on a restart, picked up the final OHS goal to make the final score, 4-2 His goal was also unassisted. Junior Josh Bobke was in goal for OHS.

The Cooney win leaves it 1-0 on the season. Thursday night at 5 p.m. OHS head coach Andrew Biebel’s team takes on Mukwonago at OHS in another nonconference match.  Next Tuesday, at OHS, Oconomowoc opens Wisconsin Little Ten play when it hosts Slinger at 7 p.m.
