Cooney swimmers host West Bend West Wednesday night at the YMCA at Pabst Farms
The OHS girls varsity swim team picked up another Wisconsin Little Ten dual meet win Thursday by demolishing Beaver Dam, 115-10. In doing so, the Cooney girls won all 12 races.
The team’s strength and past performances so far this season allowed OHS coaches Jenny Piorkowski and Britta Fell to again juggle their lineup, with some girls swimming in events they don’t normally swim in. It also allowed them to rest several of the team’s top performers, giving other girls a chance to compete.
In nine events, OHS placed first and second. In addition, with the exception of the relays and the grueling 500-yard freestyle, every Cooney win in the individual events came from underclassmen.
Underclassmen winners included freshman Brittney Zimmer, 100- and 200-yard freestyle races; sophomore Brianna Zimmer, 200-yard individual medley; junior Samantha Johnston, 50-yard free and 100-yard backstroke; freshman Amanda Jordan, 100-yard butterfly; and junior Sarah Konruff, 100-yard breaststroke.
Senior Sarah Petelinsek won the 500-yard free.
The two relay team wins came in the 200 medley, and the 400-free.
Swimming for OHS on the 200 medley team were two seniors, Taylor Tuftee and Dani Cabrera, and the Zimmer sisters, Brittney and Brianna. Swimming legs on the 400 free team were Cabrera, Johnston, Jordan, and Konruff.
Picking up second pl;ace finishes were freshman Madeline Lesniak, 500 free; sophomore Chloe Jostad, 100- and 200-yard free; junior Stephanie Gebhard, 200-yard individual medley; Petelinsek, 50-yard free, Konruff, 100-yard butterfly; the 200-yard free relay team of Brianna Zimmer, Gebhard, junior Paige Rieman and sophomore Catherine Olson; and the 400-free relay team, Tuftee, Brittney Zimmer; Riemann, and Petelinsek.
Up next for the team is a dual meet Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. against West Bend West at the YMCA at Pabst Farms. It is the last chance to see the team in action at home before it hosts the WLT conference meet on Saturday, Nov. 1.
